Exploring Potential Heroes & Their Time Periods

Purpose of Exploration: Before selecting a hero, you will use today's class to consider all your options. This activity is designed to support your selection process, even if you already have a hero in mind. Taking the time conduct initial research ensures you have considered all your options before making a final decision; we hope you encounter a topic about which you feel excited.

Browse Biographies

Use database listed below to browse for potential people on which to focus. 

Follow these steps:

  • Open the database;
  • Click on "Browse People"; 
  • Review the list and read about figures of interest for this project. 
  • Consider filtering the list, using the "Topics" drop down menu in the top left hand corner of the screen. 
  • Generate questions relating to the people you investigate.
    • What questions come to mind as you read about each person?
    • What references to events, people. places, etc. would you like to learn more about?
    • What events, both personal and societal, impacted each person you read about in the Biography database?

Explore Decades

Explore the databases below to learn about decades of interest. For students who might interview an elder, investigate the decades of her / his life; for students interested in figures from history, explore decades to learn about the time periods and figures of note. 

Follow these steps:

  • Open the database;
  • Click on a decade of interest; 
  • Review the information and generate a list of questions: 
    • What information makes you curious to learn more? 
    • What are some potential connects between this information and the elder you may select for the project? Create a list of questions you would like to address when researching the person you select for the project.
  • Exploration Purpose: Add to your knowledge of historical decades and generate questions you would like to answer through your research.
