Works in Translation: Establishing Context

Purpose

In preparation for reading works in translation this semester, you need to learn about the cultural context of each work. What you learn will enhance your abilities to analyze each author’s craft and themes.

Individual Reading

You have time in the library to collect facts and develop in initial contextual understanding for Chekhov’s short stories. Use this time to learning about the topics provided by your teacher and take notes on what you learn. The facts you collect today will inform your analysis of each story.  

Expert Groups

After you spend time gathering facts about the cultural topics relevant to the text, you will share the information with members of your class. Please keep the following essential questions in mind as you share information:

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

  • What do you need to know in order to appreciate and understand the literature?
  • How does an understanding of the author and cultural context illuminate aspects of the text?
  • How does the cultural context shape your analysis of the short stories?

Moving Forward

Please keep in mind as you read the short stories, you will ask questions and discover additional topics to research. You may want to return to these resources throughout your studies and when you write the Written Assignment.
