2019 - English 11 - Analyzing and Evaluating Resources for Credibility: Introduction

Opening Activity

Considering Bias & Evaluating Sources for Credibility

The speaker in this TEDTalk outlines the real life implications of fake information, in the form of propaganda. Because we all turn to the Internet for most of our informational needs, we must ask ourselves:

How do we research in the age of "alternative facts"? How do we determine the bias and reliability of our sources?

Guiding Questions

As you watch the TEDTalk, consider the following questions:

  • In your own lives, how do you determine what's "fake" and what's "real" online?

  • Why is it "more dangerous" when people stop believing anyone at all? How is "fake news a threat for democracy and society"?

  • What can you do to ensure the information you find is real? How can you be a part of the solution to this "information warfare"?

  • So What? How do these ideas relate to you as a student and as a citizen?
