Goals & Purpose 

Today you will select a novel for this unit of study. Please complete the activities to learn about your options before browsing the shelves and making the selection.

Learning Targets:

Today I will browse texts so that I can find an interesting book to read for class. I'll know I'm successful when I select a novel and know how / where to access the text (either through Robinson's library or the public library).

  • Consider this question as we watch the video as a class
  • Jot down your ideas on a piece of paper
  • Discuss and share ideas as a class

Browsing for Novels

Directions: 

  1. Each person will receive a paper with a notable quotation from a novel you might want to read for this unit. 
  2. Read the quotation - out loud - to a partner; listen as your partner reads their quotation. 
  3. Share your initial thoughts, based on this quotation (author's voice, potential themes, initial reaction, etc.). 
  4. Swap papers and find someone new. 
  5. Repeat this process. The goal is to speak to many different people in the class and experience a number of passages. 
  6. Discuss as a Group: What did you notice through this process? What stands out to you?

Browse the Shelves:

 

Browse fiction at RBSS by genre. Look for the Classics & Literary Fiction genre sticker, then visit the shelves to select novels of interest. Remember, you are looking for American authors for this assignment.

Library Catalogs

Search the library catalogs linked below - either other FCPS Schools or local libraries - and add to your list of potential books.

  • Open Destiny and Log in to your Library Account using your FCPS Google account
    • Click on the category "Classics & Literary Fiction" texts
    • Browse the results by clicking on texts of interest 
    • Remember, you are seeking novels by American authors for this assignment. 
  • Trick: Select All FCPS Schools if you are interested in browsing beyond Robinson.
