2019 - Honors English 12 - Banned and Challenged Books: Introduction

Introduction

Banned & Challenged Books

ALA's Statement on Access to Resources and Services in the School Library: An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights (2014) - Click the hyperlink to read more.

"The school library plays a unique role in promoting intellectual freedom. It serves as a point of voluntary access to information and ideas and as a learning laboratory for students as they acquire critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed in a pluralistic society. Although the educational level and program of the school necessarily shapes the resources and services of a school library, the principles of the Library Bill of Rights apply equally to all libraries, including school libraries."

Our Essential Questions:

  • Why are books challenged?
  • What can be gained by analyzing a variety of perspectives regarding challenged texts and your rights as a reader?

Opening Activity

What are some reasons a person may ask to have a book removed from a library or school?

  • Write one idea per post-it note.
  • Next sort the post-it notes with those at your table. What categories emerge?

  • Now, watch the video to the right, read the ALA statement (above), and review the infographic (below). How does the challenged list connect to your brainstorm? What else is important about what you heard or read?

  • So What? As a table, be prepared to share two ideas - perhaps something that startled you or something you find important - with the class.
