Research Goals & Purpose 

Today you will research and take notes with the goal of learning about a musician's biography and the social & political context relating to their art. Musicians are impacted by the worlds they inhabit. Learning about a musician's background as well as the social, political, and cultural movements that took place when they were writing their songs will augment your abilities to analyze their lyrics. 

You will also learn about the SIFT Method for evaluating online sources; this skill will enable you to save time when you seek reliable and credible information online. 

 

Learning Targets 

Today I will read, research, and take notes, 

So that I can consider information from different sources and use it in new ways to explain and communicate ideas to my class. 

I'll know I'm successful when I research, take notes, and cite sources in order to:  

1) learn about my topic

2) ensure that ideas and information I use are meaningful and reliable by evaluating their validity, relevance, and impact

3) take notes and prepare my presentation for the class.

Finding answers

Take a couple minutes to determine which of the following websites you would recommend to a family member with a small child: 

Test your knowledge and skills - Who is best at identifying what's fake and what's real? 

Write: 

To what degree does political affiliation affect the way people find and interpret information? Explain your thinking. Please be honest with yourself; don't write what you think is the 'correct' answer but rather what you actually believe. 

Discuss: 

Now, review the polls and graphs below and discuss the three questions posed in the polls.

  • What stands out to you? What might be significant about these poll results? 
  • Describe your approach to scrutinizing online material.
    • If you are suspicious of what you read or view online, what do you do? 
    • How do you quickly assess what you are reading or viewing? 
  • To what degree do you repost information online? How do you determine what to repost? 

Learning Log: One of our learning goals for this unit is to empower you to build a capacity to critically discern sources of information and what's valid. With this goal in mind, you will choose four days where you will reflect upon what you've learned through the activities completed in class and complete a Learning Log (YOUR copy can be found in your teacher's Schoology course). We will be considering some of the following Portrait of a Graduate skills, relating to Communication and Critical and Creative Thinking
