Sometimes we read a book that enables us to look in the mirror; we recognize ourselves within the pages of the text. For this assignment, you have the opportunity to select a choice book that encourages you to look through a window into a culture with which you are unfamiliar. While no author or story represents an entire culture or people, you will have the opportunity to examine "Language and Culture" within your choice text by analyzing  "language as identity" and "language as power".

As you select a text, consider the following characteristics; the book should be a window into at least one of the following:

• A country other than the U.S.
• A work in translation
• First-generation American experiences
• Distinct American cultures outside of your experiences

Refer to this guide as you look for your next read. Please click the tabs at the top of the page to access different resources. The guide is designed to spark your interest in variety of books, but you should not limit your selections to these texts.
