Ruiz: Scholarly Sources

Journal Articles

Include a scholarly journal article as one source.  Search JSTOR for journal articles written for an academic audience.

  • Limit the search to "full-text" or "content available to me."
  • For Proquest:  limit your search to "scholarly journals" or "peer-reviewed."

Search Examples

Search tips:

  • Use boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to combine terms, starting with broad terms related to the dictatorship or regime.  Choose "content I can access" for the full text, and narrow your search to articles written in English.
  • Brainstorm your topic for a variety of keywords to search. Keep track of those that work the best.

How to interpret search results and choose an article:

  • Read article titles and keywords to anticipate what the article is about
  • Infer based on synonyms whether an article is related to your research question
  • You may choose and cite an article where only part of the article addresses your research question
