Combating Intolerance: Overview

Introduction

Combating Intolerance

Keeping up with current events often feels like a full time job. The news cycles can change from moment to moment, and it's not easy to know what information can be trusted or believed. As we scroll through our media feeds, scan articles online, and encounter information from a wide variety of sources, we must begin considering the CREDIBILITY, the ACCURACY, the RELIABILITY, and the DATE (called the CARD test). We must also seek multiple perspectives, because it can be difficult to find unbiased information. For today's activity, please scrutinize the information you find and think about the following:

Who is responsible for the information? Do you trust the source?

What is motivation of the person publishing the information?

Can the information be verified in more than one source?

Resources

Write about the following:

  • What does the class want to create?
  • How will the information be depicted?
  • What words - think keywords - are appropriate and respectful when discussing these topics?
