Sustainability and Sharks: Sharks

Overview

According to World Wildlife Fund’s Living Planet Report 2022, a comprehensive study of trends in global biodiversity and the health of the planet, 75% of shark and ray species are considered at risk of extinction due to unsustainable fishing practices. In this activity, we will learn the causes and effects of sharks and rays being overfished and evaluate current fishing solutions to determine which are the most sustainable, based on their social, economic, and environmental impacts.

Today I will identify human pressures that impact fish populations and ocean health

So that I understand the concepts of sustainability and sustainable fishing through group discussions

I'll know I've got it when I can contribute to my group in deciding if an activity is sustainable and then creating an idea to solve overfishing

  ATL Focus - Research:

  • Collect, record, and verify data
  • Process data and report results

Do we need sharks?

Questions to think about while watching the video: Do We Need Sharks?

  • What type of relationship do sharks have with their marine ecosystem?

  • What changes would happen in the marine ecosystem if sharks were to disappear?

  • In addition to upsetting the balance of their marine ecosystem, how would the disappearance of sharks affect humans?
