Topic Exploration - Today's Goals and Purpose

  • Browse the resources and begin taking note of issues and current events that pique your interest. While you may not have time to read full chapters or articles, enjoy investigating a variety of publications and begin asking curiosity questions. 
  • You will spend about one-third of the class period at each station. 
  • Explore potential topics, ask questions, and get a sense of the resources. 
  • Purpose: Use the time to dip your toes into a variety of issues and learn enough information to make an educated choice when selecting a topic for this project. If you remain open to the exploration process, we hope you encounter a topic that truly engages your curiosity.

  • So that I can pique my curiosity and learn enough information to make an educated choice when selecting a topic.
  • I'll know I'm successful when I select a debatable topic that makes me want to learn and research more (NOT something I’ve already researched).

Browse the databases listed below; explore a variety of topics, create questions that make you curious, and learn about different issues. As you explore, take note of the database features such as Browse Issues and Topics”,  View all Issues”, and "Essential Questions" (this aspect may help you develop a research questions).

Browse the eBooks and digital periodicals materials and begin taking note of issues and current events that pique your interest. While you may not have time to read full chapters or articles, enjoy investigating a variety of publications and begin asking curiosity questions.

    • Use the "Control F" feature to search within the eBooks and target your searches

  • Browse magazines and newspapers based on topics of interest to you
  • Examine the front page or cover story/photos, as well as the headlines 
  • Turn to a story of interest and skim it
  • Examine several that catch your interest
