Challenge / Injustice: Writing a Nonfiction Article : Step 1: Open & Explore

Day 1 Learning Targets

Day 1 Learning Targets

Today I will explore various challenges and/or injustices that impact individuals in the U.S. or around the world,
so that I can help the 7th grade community create a list of potential topics.
I will know I have it when I have added at least three ideas to the group brainstorm.

Day 1 Activities

Directions: To set the stage for today, we will watch one of the two Ted Talks to watch as a class. (You can always watch the 2nd one on your own time.) Consider the questions below when you watch. Be prepared to discuss your takeaways with your table group after watching.

  • What is the presenter's purpose or goal?
  • What is your takeaway from the Ted Talk you watched?
  • How do you think this Ted Talk might connect to your upcoming English research project?

Directions:

Enter the Proquest Sirs Discover database, go to the dropdown arrow with Research Topics in the upper left-hand corner and pick Controversial Topics.

Explore potential topics for your Challenge / Injustice research.

When you find a good possibility, write down the topic on your colored post-it note.

(Each tablemate will have different colored post-its.)

Directions:

In order to help students "turn moments into momentum" or "tell your truth", the English 7 teachers want to compile all the great topic ideas for the Challenges / Injustices. This is YOUR chance to share your ideas!
1. Consider your post-it notes as well as your tablemates' post-it notes.
2. Pick what you think are the 3 BEST topic ideas and rank them in order.
3. Take a moment to consider why / how the topic is a problem that needs a solution.
4. Complete
THIS FORM to submit your ideas. This is REQUIRED for an English assignment.
