Challenge / Injustice: Writing a Nonfiction Article : Step 3: Research

Day 3 Learning Targets

Day 3 Learning Targets

Today I will conduct research on my focused essential question,
so that I have facts that support both viewpoints.
I will know I have it when I have at least 3 sources with an appropriate number of notecards in NoodleTools.
 (Honors must have 4 sources.)

Getting Reading to Research: Key Words

Before you start researching, you need to brainstorm KEYWORDS (a list of related words that will help you find information addressing your research question). If you have good keywords, you will find helpful information faster. If you don't have good key words, you will likely waste time not finding what you need. Good keywords are short words or phrases that describe your topic or closely relate to your topic.

On this KEY WORD BRAINSTORMING document (paper document will be provided in class):

  • Write your research question and focused topic, if you have one.
  • Underline words in the question that are important to your topic.
  • Write list of underlined words in chart
  • Brainstorm related words / synonyms to underlined words
  • Brainstorm words that describe the larger topic of which your topic is part of
  • Brainstorm words or phrases that are subtopics of your topic
