22-23 - English 9 - Disability Awareness Project: Introduction

Overview & Learning Targets

English 9: Disability Awareness Project

Research Goals & Purpose

Today you will research and take notes in order to select a topic, learn about it, and create a PSA (Public Service Announcement) to educate and inspire the actions of your classmates.

Driving Questions

  • What should people know about living with the disability you are researching?
  • How does an individual's story educate or inspire other people?
  • What concrete actions can students and staff take to foster a more inclusive environment at Robinson for people of all abilities?

Learning Targets

Today I will read, research, and share my notes,

So that I can consider information from different sources and use it in new ways to explain and communicate ideas to my class.

I'll know I'm successful when I research, take notes, and cite sources in order to:

1) learn about my topic

2) collaborate with my partner

3) share what I learn with the class

Opening Activity

Directions:

  1. Review the PSA posters below and individually write about the following:
    • What is the purpose of each PSA poster?
    • What are the takeaways? (For example: What will you remember beyond this moment)?
    • Which PSA poster is most powerful or successful? Explain your reasoning.
  2.  With your table group, discuss your observations; be prepared to share one specific comment with the class.
  3. Class discussion:
    • Which PSA do you prefer? Why?
    • What makes a successful PSA?
