2018-19 Honors Biology - Scholarly Journal Articles: Step Two: Abstract

The Abstract

Purpose

The abstract of a scholarly article outlines the essential information in one succinct paragraph. In this station, you will analyze the abstract and consider the difference between a scholarly article detailing an Experiment versus someone's Review of prior research.

Experiment vs. Review

 Task #1:

  1. Each group will receive one hardcopy of the abstract.
  2. Individually, reread the abstract (also linked to the right).
  3. As a group, discuss the following questions and determine what to highlight on the group copy of the abstract:
    • Highlight the words or phrases that indicate this article includes an experiment (not a review of an experiment). For example, you should highlight the word "hypothesized". What else?
    • What is the experimentExplain the experiment in your own words; write this explanation at the bottom of the group's copy of the abstract.

Task #2:

Individually, complete "The Abstract" section of your Google Doc / handout: How does this article relate to biology? Write a paragraph and explain your thinking with details.
